Tilak Varma Opens Up on His Favourite Batting Position in the Order
Tilak Varma has quickly established himself as one of Indian cricket's most dependable young batters, thanks largely to his ability to slot into almost any position the team management requires. In a recent interaction, the left-hander was asked about his personal preference when it comes to batting order, and his answer offered a glimpse into the mindset that has made him so valuable to both India and Mumbai Indians.
"I always like batting wherever the team needs me," Tilak said, when quizzed on his ideal spot in the lineup. "Whether it's number three, four, or finishing things off lower down, my job is to adapt and contribute. I don't like putting a fixed number on where I bat because cricket situations change, and I want to be ready for whatever role is given to me." The response underlines the flexibility that has become a hallmark of his game since his breakthrough into the national side.
A Middle-Order Mainstay in the Making
Since making his India debut, Tilak has largely operated in the middle order, often walking in during tricky phases of the innings and steadying things with calm, composed strokeplay. His performances in white-ball cricket have drawn comparisons to some of India's finest finishers, yet he insists he is equally comfortable building an innings from the top of the order if required. Franchise cricket, particularly his stints with Mumbai Indians, has further sharpened this versatility, with team think tanks frequently shuffling him between positions based on match situations.
CricketBuzz understands that this adaptability is exactly what Indian team management values most about the youngster, especially with crucial tournaments on the horizon. As CricketBuzz reported earlier this season, selectors have been keen on nurturing batters who can bat anywhere without fuss, and Tilak fits that mould perfectly. With his calm demeanour and growing maturity at the crease, fans can expect him to continue featuring prominently across formats.
