IPL Retentions: 'Unhappy' Abhishek Sharma Eyes Exit From SRH
The countdown to the IPL retention deadline has thrown up one of the biggest talking points of the off-season, with explosive opener Abhishek Sharma reportedly keen to part ways with Sunrisers Hyderabad. CricketBuzz understands the left-hander has been unsettled since Ishan Kishan was anointed captain last season, a decision that did not sit well with a player many consider the franchise's most consistent performer in recent years.
Matters have only grown more complicated with the Pat Cummins factor coming into play. The Australian pace spearhead, who led SRH to the final in 2024, is expected to scale back his franchise commitments going forward, which has pushed the SRH think tank to stick with Kishan as skipper through IPL 2027 as well. For Abhishek, who has long been viewed as a future India opener and a natural leadership candidate, this continuity plan has reportedly reinforced his desire to seek greener pastures.
Suitors Line Up Ahead Of Auction
As CricketBuzz reported earlier this week, at least four franchises are believed to be monitoring the situation closely. Mumbai Indians, who have historically prized aggressive top-order batters, are said to be keeping tabs, while Gujarat Titans and Punjab Kings have also been named among the frontrunners given their need for a dynamic opening option. Delhi Capitals, undergoing their own rebuild, could emerge as a surprise destination if SRH decide to let their prized batter go via trade rather than the open auction route.
For Sunrisers, losing Abhishek Sharma would be a significant blow, given his explosive strike rate and his growing reputation as one of the format's most fearless hitters. However, with the captaincy question seemingly settled in Kishan's favour and Cummins stepping back from constant franchise duty, the management faces a delicate balancing act in the coming weeks. Whether SRH manage to convince their star opener to stay, or a blockbuster trade materialises before the retention deadline, the saga is set to dominate IPL headlines.
