IPL 2025 Shatters Six-Hitting Records With Staggering 1,294 Maximums

The Indian Premier League has once again redefined the limits of power-hitting, with the 2025 season producing a staggering 1,294 sixes โ€” the highest tally in the tournament's history. This remarkable figure edges past the previous benchmark set in IPL 2023, when batters cleared the ropes 1,124 times, and comfortably outstrips IPL 2022's tally of 1,062 sixes. To put the growth in perspective, the inaugural 2008 edition saw just 622 sixes struck across the entire tournament, meaning the six-count has surged by well over 100 percent in less than two decades.

Cricket experts point to several factors behind this explosion in big hitting, particularly since 2018. The introduction of the Impact Player rule has allowed teams to load their line-ups with specialist power-hitters without worrying about bowling depth, while the increasingly aggressive template of modern T20 cricket has pushed batters to take more risks from the very first ball. Franchises have also prioritised recruiting explosive hitters capable of clearing boundaries consistently, further fuelling the six-hitting surge seen in recent seasons.

Individual Six-Hitting Milestones Through the Years

Despite the collective explosion in sixes, one individual record has stood remarkably firm. Chris Gayle's 59 sixes in the 2012 season remain the benchmark for a single IPL campaign, a mark that has never been seriously threatened since. Gayle himself dominated this list for years, following up with 44 sixes in 2011 and 51 in 2013, showcasing the kind of destructive hitting that earned him the nickname 'Universe Boss'.

In more recent times, Andre Russell came closest to challenging Gayle's peak, smashing 52 sixes during the 2019 season, while Jos Buttler struck 45 in 2022. The trend has continued with a new generation of hitters โ€” Abhishek Sharma's 42 sixes in 2024 and Nicholas Pooran's 40 in 2025 highlight how modern batters, armed with better bats, shorter boundaries at some venues, and fearless intent, continue to push the six-hitting culture of the IPL to unprecedented levels.
